Quark is a Steka-A which stands for Setka Atlantic.
The Setka is a 5-meter long Polish design by Janusz Maderski which is from 1986. The design is made to be self-built and in different varyations. http://www.maderski.pl/setka.html . Since 2012 there is a challenge crossing the Atlantic Ocean. For this race there is a Setka variant.
The designer Janusz Maderski has participated in the challange himself in 2012 and finished in 45 days.
Since 2013 there is a version like Quark with a straight bow.
The Ocean version has extra floating power in the bow and backship.
A mast filled with foam, so when flipped it turns back up faster.
The class has been designed in a way that you can’t get advantage if you have more money. And the self-steering installation can’t be electrical.
The material is 8 up to 20 mm plywood with a layer of epoxy around it.
The boat is also designed in a way that you can have 2 frontsails at the same time and that makes the boat easyer to balance and keep itself on course.
The challange has so far taken place twice: in 2012 and 2016. The next one is in 2020. In 2012 and 2016 you had to build your boat by yourself, in 2020 you can also use a used boat.
Quark is a 2nd handed boat. Quark has a unique history. It has been built by Tomasz Turski for the SPA 2016 he started in 2014 and drowned on his first tour on the Baltic sea. The Boat was not yet finished. You can read more on the blog he made http://mojasetka.blogspot.com/
eventually the boat was sold and participated in the SPA 2016 but with Arkadiusz Pawelek http://keessetka.blogspot.com/ Earlier he crossed the Atlantic Ocean in a Rubberboot and also rounded Kaaphoorn in a rubberboot. The SPA 2016 took him 38 days. And with very minimalistic equipment. An example of it not having to cost very much.
He has written a book about him crossing the ocean. Sadly it hasn’t been translated yet.
Arkadiusz is now perparing himself to sail non-stop around the globe in a ship under 5 metres in length.
He wants to build another boat for this and sells Quark.
Right now quark is beiing prepared and is already signed up for the SAC 2020 (the international name for SPA 2020). There are 8 participants at the moment and everyone is busy building his/her ship. You can follow everything on:
